Submission Guidelines

Submission Guidelines

We will be closing to submissions from June 1st to August 1st

Anthologies

Anthologies are open to all authors, published and unpublished. We do not discriminate on publication status. However, the best stories will be selected from all entries. We are looking for well written stories with original plots. We like character rich stories that make us get involved with the characters. We do not like excessive gore or sexual content unless it is absolutely necessary to the story line. We do not like stories that have weak endings or tired themes. It should go without saying, but; all stories must contain at least one element pertinent to the theme of the anthology. Stories should be between 3,000 and 10,000 words. Poems are also accepted, but should be long Poe-esque style poems.

Novels

Novel submissions are also open to all published and never been published authors. Again, we do not discriminate on publication status. We accept submissions in just about any genre. The most important quality we look for is creative original content that is well written. Make us laugh, make us cry or scare the hell out of us. Just make it a novel we will still be thinking about days later. When submitting your novel, please see formatting guidelines below. Also, please only submit first two chapters and last chapter. If we are interested, we will request the entire novel.

Novella & Short story collections.

We are also open to Novella and short story collection submissions. Short story collections should be single author only.  We are looking for the same thing in these submissions as mentioned above. Short story collections should be eclectic and show the full range of the author’s talent. Every story should not be the same or another boring variation on the same theme. In short, we want you to thrill us. When submitting a novella, please adhere to formatting guidelines listed below. Please submit first two chapters and last chapter only. For short story collections, please also adhere to formatting guidelines. Please submit three stories which you feel best represent your body of work. We will ask for more if we are interested.

Format

All submissions should be in either Word.doc or .Rtf formats and sent as attachments to the cover letter email. Type should be Times New Roman 12 point. 1.5 line spacing. One inch margins. Four asterisks or number signs between scene breaks. Page breaks between chapters. Cover email should be a brief introduction to author with links to either author webpage or blog and brief synopsis of work. Twitter link is also helpful. We like to check author presence out as well as your writing. Author contact info and word count should be on the first page of manuscript. Author names, title of work and page numbers are not necessary on each page of MS. Please put the title of the work, which type of submission (novella, anthology, short story, novel), and word count in the subject line of the email. Send to Angelicknightpress@gmail.com

We expect relatively clean submissions. Do not send us your first draft. We want to see technically correct work. This means proper grammar, no dropped words, no misspellings. Think about sentence structure and story structure. Read your work out loud and listen to the rhythm of it. Please have someone else take a critical look at it before you submit. All of these efforts will pay off with a better submission on your part and a shorter editing time. Clean submissions scream "professional." While first draft subs mark you as an amateur.

A Few Last Notes

All works that are accepted are subject to editing. Any author who is not amenable to editing should not submit. We feel that quality editing leads to quality products and we strive to only publish works of high quality. We also offer high quality, in-house cover art and publisher funded marketing campaigns. Your success is our success. We are a family at Angelic Knight Publishing and all authors are treated as such. We offer a large share of the royalties to the author in lieu of advances. There will never be a fee to the author for publishing with us.

We ask for electronic and worldwide digital rights for a period of one month after release of the book. You are free after that to have your work published elsewhere.  We do accept multiple submissions from one author. We do not accept simultaneous submissions or reprints.

All books will be published in ebook format and sold on our website as well as through a variety of ebook vendors. Books will also be published in trade paperback form and sold on Amazon and other bookstores. Each author will receive a free copy of their work and the ability to buy print copies of their book at a discounted price.

Our response time is currently four to six weeks. Please do not query or email or tweet publishers/press/editor with questions before this time frame has passed. It is annoying and does not endear you to us. We are authors ourselves and understand the frustration of waiting and will get back to you as soon as we can. We will try to give personal rejections whenever possible.

Our preferred method of payment is PayPal. We pay quarterly and will furnish statements to prove you are getting your agreed upon share of royalties. We feel treating our authors fairly is of the utmost importance.

Due to the volume of submissions we are receiving, those not following our submission and format guidelines will be returned to the author with a request for re-submission in the correct form.

If you have any questions regarding any of our policies, please email them to angelicknightpress@gmail.com.

Thank you! We look forward to reading your work!

  1. You say "no reprints" but does that apply to short story collections? That is, would you consider a collection (single author) that had a mix of unpublished stories and reprints?

Seems to me that if you insisted on unpublished stories in such a collection, you would be getting the "leftovers" that everyone rejected, while a mixture might include some of the author's best work, previously published but perhaps no longer readily available.

  2. To answer your question Jim, in the case of a single author story collection, we will accept reprints with two stipulations. One, that the author can prove that all rights have reverted to the author. And two, that the reprints make up no more than 1/3rd of the total collection. That way, we get some of the author's best work and some fresh new material.

    Thank you for your interest,
    Stacey

  3. Hi.
Does self-published material count as reprint?
If a story is up on Amazon Kindle, Nook, or whatever, it is considered a reprint?

    Thanks for your answer.

    1. Jeff,

I think I answered your quesions in email, but just for the record. Yes, something self-published does count as a reprint.

  4. Hi
Please could you tell me what percentage you pay as author royalties? Plus, you say in your mission statement that your costs including marketing. Could you spell out what form that takes? Thank you

    1. Jenny,

We really don't discuss royalties, contracts, or marketing plans until we offer an acceptance on a submission. I think you'll find that is the policy of most presses.

      Thanks,
      Stacey

  5. Hello,

May I ask, what is the maximum word count for a short story collection from one author? I only ask because I am writing a collection at the moment and I seek a place that these nightmares can call home...

    Thank you for your time,

    Your's sincerely,

    1. Rob,

We really don't have a set word count maximum. If we accepted your collection, but felt it was too long we would discuss options then.

      Thanks,
      Stacey

  7. Do you consider anything publish to our personal blogs as a reprint?

    ReplyDelete
  8. We do consider those reprints, as they've already been put forth for public consumption. However, depending on the popularity of the blog, and how many people have seen the posts, it can be discussed. If you chose to submit, please state that the work is available on your blog and include a blog link. Thanks.

  9. Okay I worked with Blaze on one of my publications and working on some new stuff, James Hartley was part of my magazine too a few years back so I can vouch for Blaze and James about how talented they are. I personally try not to publish reprints but sometimes if they appeared online and like the story I would ask permission if I can publish it.

    1. Hi, Nickolaus. Sometimes a blend of old and new is great. Like Stacey says, we add the best and the fresh together.

  10. Hi there,
I have just finished my first draft of a story for the 50 shades of decay anthology and I was wondering if the above part of your submission guidelines still applies for this antho.
"We do not like excessive gore or sexual content unless it is absolutely necessary to the story line."
As it is a zombie erotica there it's pretty much all gross and sex so just thought I'd better check as I don't want to waste your time.
    Thanks
    Julie

  11. Julie, it does not apply for this anthology. By the very nature of the genre "zombie erotica" we're calling for gore and sex. In this case, they are essential to the storyline.

    Thanks,
    Stacey

  12. Hello,

I was wondering what your preferred word count is for novella submissions. For example, would a novella that's on the shorter end (say 25k) be alright, or do you prefer submissions to be on the higher end (40k - 50k)?

    Thanks,
    Natasha

  13. Natasha,

We don't have a specific word count for novellas. We will consider anything from 15,000 to 70,000 as a novella submission.

    Thanks,
    Stacey

  14. Hello. I have One story that would qualify as a Short story. (Just under 7,000 words)I really think it would make a great little pocket book. It's broken nicely into 4 chapters. Any interest or do I have to wait until I manage a collection?

  15. BoJo,

We do not publish stand alone short stories. We only do them in collections, anthologies, or as part of a series such as the Southern Hauntings Saga.

    Thanks,
    Stacey
