The Cover Says It All

Recently, I read a conversation on the Paranormal Reads Facebook page. The question was how do you feel when authors change the covers of their books. The response was one of confusion and dislike. Many readers said they'd repurchased books they'd already bought or read because they thought they were new, when really it was just a new cover. Well, unless the author is self published, they likely had no choice in the matter. Most publishers control covers.

Publishers change covers for a variety of reasons, mostly sales. Because as much as we like to repeat the phrase, "don't judge a book by it's cover," we do. If we're being honest, a cover can make or break a book. A shoddy looking cover will definitely suggest the work inside might be shoddy as well. A well done cover catches your attention and makes you take it off the (virtual or actual) shelf. It's your first impression. So obviously, switching up a cover may improve sales.

Then, there are artistic reasons to change a cover. For instance, when we first published Cindy Keen Reynders' 7 Year Witch, she wanted a "Bewitched" type cover, reminiscent of the old TV show. She and Rebecca worked together to make her cover. And it turned out great. We all loved it. But Rebecca, being an artist, wasn't quite satisfied. And over the year since the book has been out, she kept thinking about it. Recently she had a chance to peruse a collection of romance books. Having never read the genre, she hadn't paid a lot of attention to the covers before. She took what she saw to heart. And that, my friends, is why we changed the cover.

The new cover.

We hope you like it as much as we do! And if you haven't read 7 Year Witch, Book one of the Wysteria Hedge Haven Clan, you should. It's a frolicking romp through time, with magic, humor, and a spicy romance. And Book Two, A Witch at Midnight, will be released on Thursday. This one has a demon, demi-gods, a white witch, and a hunk. Cindy manages to build a believable reality for characters you can't help but root for. And when characters return in the consecutive books, they feel like old friends. Don't miss this exciting paranormal romance series.

  3. I love the new cover. The old one was great, mind you, but this one just really pops. And it goes well with the second book in the series. Great job!

  4. I know what you're going for here. But, it kind of looks like all the other romance-type books out there, covers I stray from. I was kind of surprised at this. I do hope, though, that the new covers will sell more of Cindy's books because she deserves to be read. Sorry, just my opinion.

    1. I certainly hope Cindy sells more books as well, Patricia. As much zing as the new cover has, I'm partial to the first cover. Just my opinion.
